Wedding in Mochos, Crete

Village weddings are a wonderful experience. The photographs here are a combination of two weddings as it is difficult to capture the full days' events. The day starts at 7.30am with the local ladies peeling the potatoes and the local butcher preparing the lamb. The men start to cook the lamb at 8.00am. The butcher then cuts and salts the pork for the second of the hot meals which will be cooked in the ovens of the village bakeries.
Around 10.00am the chairs and tables are put out by the young men of the village and Papa Manolis.
At approx 6.00pm the ceremony of dressing the bride takes place at her house. This is accompanied by the wedding band and of course food and drink for all the onlookers.A similar ceremony takes place at the grooms house.
The wedding usually starts at around 7.30 to 8.00pm followed by a party. There are usually around 2500 to 3000 guests at these weddings and in total 5 courses plus drinks are provided for all.
The party and dancing continues until around 5.00 or 6.00 am (including inside the tavernas).
